India, officially the Republic of India (Hindi: भारत गणराज्य, Bhārat Gaṇarājya), is a country in South Asia. With 1.2 billion people it is the most densely populated country in the world. (after China with 1.3 billion). About 35-40% of the Indian population lives in extreme poverty, in total that’s about 420 to 480 million people! Children, women/girls and people with a disability suffer the most.

India is a diverse society full of contrasts. There are lots of different cultures and groups, the cast system still has a large influence in the society and there are major differences between the rich and the poor, between traditional and modern en between (groups of) cities and the countryside.

Each state has its own language, but the main language is Hindi, which is spoken by roughly 40% of the population.

  • Tamil Nadu

Kindia Foundation is active in the state of Tamil Nadu, in the south-east of India. The main language is Tamil. Tamil Nadu has about 65 million inhabitants and the capital city is Chennai (Madras). The state has an old culture that has developed from lots of different religious beliefs. The people here are friendly and welcoming.

Even though Tamil Nadu is one of the most urbanised parts of India, it’s agricultural parts are still extremely important, as 75% of the peoples lives off of agricultural practises.
